initial thoughts upon listening to the new Mia Kat compilation.

srsly, I did not expect Cedar Boy Bailey to be this good. I saw him doing one of these sets a year and a half ago and wasn't really blown away, but this track is SO good; arguably even better than the Buxton track on the cd (which is also pretty great).

digging the new Hollywood Black song. another band I hadn't listened to in a long time and am amazed at how great they've gotten.

also, even the bands that I didn't already know sound great. especially Dignan. I need to check out more Dignan.

what's been up lately.

so, if anyone in the world still reads this thing (like anyone ever did in the first place), you've probably a complete lack of posting lately. a few reasons:

1) i'm lazy
2) i've got 4 english classes at UH, which ='s way too much work.
3) i got a job in the food service industry (fancy way of saying i make sandwiches at Quizno's)
4) i'm lazy

so, sorry. but hey, Westheimer Block Party November 14th and 15th! Party!

summerfest review.

octopus project >> the sword >> broken social scene >> explosions in the sky.

those 4 bands playing back to back to back to back saturday sum up the extravaganza that was FPH's Summerfest.

where else are you going to see the cutesy pop music (seriously, I kept expecting to hear Microscopic Metronome during their set) of Octopus Project, the stoner metal of Austin's The Sword (holy eff, brutal), Canadian indie rock allstars Broken Social Scene, and the instrumental post-rock stylings of Explosions in a row, or even at the same festival?

yes, waiting in a super long line and missing Los Skarnale's set sucked, but thats my own fault for showing up so late. Young Mammals sounded great as I walked in, B L A C K I E owned balls, Octopus Project was poppy sweetness, The Sword were great, BSS was better than at Numbers, and EITS was just a great way to end the day.

I wish I had seen more locals. Ryan Scroggins and O Pioneers! were also great.

Of Montreal sunday reminded me of Bowie mixed with Flaming Lips theatrics mixed with lots of acid. Hurray for Elephant 6!

Hurray for Free Press! Hurray for next year!

my thoughts on sumerfest.

so, the rain, a terrible sunburn, and lack of a ride kept me from making it out to day 2 of summerfest (though I should be able to make it to Of Montreal's closing set later). I'm pretty sad I had to miss Buxton, Ume, Grandfather Child, and Riverboat Gamblers, but the memories from yesterday help make up for it.

anyways, here are a few of my thoughts about summerfest. comments, complaints, suggestions, etc.

1) the lines- this is the only complaint I had (well, only one that mother nature didn't control). 2 hours in a will call line while people without tickets could just walk right up and buy them is ridiculous. likewise, the food and drink tickets lines were pretty bad too. I understand getting volunteers is a hard thing to do, but maybe just positioning the volunteers a little better could have helped out. more people working the will call line or something. hopefully by next year this problem can be solved with an old fashioned hard copy ticket that can be mailed to you and exchanged for wristbands at the gate or something. and in the case of the food and drinks, there really isn't much to do about that. the lines are gonna be long, especially at a first year festival. over time, more people will volunteer to help, more food vendors will come to the festival, and the lines will go down. hopefully FPH won't make the same mistake Ziegfest made a few years ago, going from having a ton of food vendors and short lines one year to one vendor the next and 2 hour waits just to get food. that would be unbearable. i have a feeling Omar and crew will get something done for next years festival to cut out the unnaturally long lines.

2) speaking of next years festival, how about Winterfest? winter in Texas is not as harsh as winter in the northern states, and having the fest then could make it more of an attraction to out of town music fans. who wouldn't want to escape the snowy northeast for a weekend of good music? in the summer, this is just another festival that might eventually fail due to people not wanting to withstand the heat, in the winter it could be something people would REALLY look forward to. and not like, in the heart of winter or anything. late November, early December, something like that.

3) hey, this is Texas. let's get an alt-country/folk headliner next year. like Okkervil. okay, this is just me expressing how much I want to see Okkervil in Houston.

4) aftershows- I think it'd be cool to have to do aftershows the same way the Block Party night shows work. set them up at Mango's, La Strada, and Number's, have 5 dollar wristbands for them, and showcase some of the great locals that didn't get to play the festival.

5) keep doing what you're doing: the lineup ruled this weekend, the location was great, people actually came out, there was free Vitamin Water. aside from the few minor things I mentioned, the festival turned out great. please, keep doing this if you can. this is a huge thing for the city of Houston.

quick review summerfest day 1.

octopus project = EPIC
explosions was too.

broken social scene @ pressfest > broken social scene @ numbers.

best things overheard: tie between "they (the sword) remind me of pantera" and "i listen to korn every night".

B L A C K I E owned.

only complaint: 2 hour will call wait, but when that's my only complaint, it shows the promoters did a great job.

better review and stuff (probably) monday.

tomorrow: of montreal, devin the dude, buxton, wild moccasins, ume, voxtrot, riverboat gamblers, OMG TOMORROW COULD BE EVEN BETTER THAN TODAY WAS.

ps: new Hollywood Black song review +that long awaited Buxton review coming soon. like this week.

summer fest preview part 2.

the headliner's sunday don't inspire the same awe as the BSS>EITS ultra mega hip awesomeness of saturday, but all in all, it is just as solid as day 1.

first off, yes, Of Montreal is headlining. expect theatrics. expect poppy goodness. expect a strange close to a strange weekend.

local faves Buxton and Wild Moccasins also play. and so do Austin's Riverboat Gamblers. PUNX RAWK!

poppy singer-songwriter Chase Hamblin and legendary punks The Hates also play.

so yeah. good bands all day.

do you know what this weekend is?

FREEPRESSSUMMERFEST.

i am excited.
you are excited.

today, i'm gonna offer up a quick preview of day 1, saturday.

first off, the headliners:

BSS into Explosions. Holy EFF.

admittedly, the fact that Kevin Drew and company start at 6:55 is slightly offsetting, but what else can you expect from an outdoors festival in the middle of downtown Houston?

BSS was in town back in February, where they played a sold out gig at Numbers. and while that show was probably really great, i'd been awake for 2 straight days writing papers and was too tired to pay complete attention. FAIL@ME.

Explosions hit up Austin during SXSW, a show which ranks really high on my list of best shows i've ever been to (though it probably doesn't top the excellent bill @ this years Outdoor show), but i heard complaints the sound wasn't great for people not lucky enough to be up front. hopefully that problem doesn't happen saturday.

but psh, everyone knows the headliners. let's take a quick look at the undercard.

the good: The Sword, O Pioneers!, B L A C K I E vs. Cop Warmth, I Am Mesmer, Los Skarnales, Fat Tony, Octopus Project

the bad: COME ON! B L A C K I E and Fat Tony effectively playing at the same time? Nuh uh. Major conflict which shouldn't be happening.

PS: Dear Free Press, I love you.
